Michele Fiala
Michele Fiala has performed throughout the United States, Italy, and Canada, and will perform this summer in England and France. Her CD of contemporary oboe music entitled The Light Wraps You (MSR Classics) has received international critical acclaim. Carla Rees in MusicWeb International spoke of “Fiala’s expressive oboe playing,” and wrote that “The oboe sound is rich and warm…the playing is excellent, and the musical ideas are communicated well.” Jeanne Belfy, in The Double Reed, called the CD “a classy affair from start to finish” and said, “…the interpretations are elegant…Fiala’s tone is light, mellow and flexible.” A reviewer from the Salt Lake Tribune spoke of her “energy and buoyant playing.” Michele also appears on recordings on Centaur, Equilibrium, and d'Note Records.
Michele has performed with numerous orchestras, including the Phoenix Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, Orchestra Nashville, Knoxville Symphony, Tucson Symphony, and Memphis Symphony, and with such artists as Lee Ann Rimes, Roberta Flack, Barry Williams, Daniel Rodriguez, and Trey Anastasio. She has performed in the Banff Summer Music Festival (Banff, Alberta, Canada), the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute (Toronto, Ontario, Canada), and six of the last seven conferences of the International Double Reed Society. She has given guest recitals at the Conservatories of Novara and Udine, Italy, University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, University of Memphis, Arizona State University, Miami University, University of South Florida, Washington State University, and Utah State University.
Michele is the new Assistant Professor of Oboe and Music Theory at Ohio University. She previously held a similar position at Western Kentucky University. She holds both a Doctor of Musical Arts degree and a Master of Music degree from Arizona State University, where she studied with Martin Schuring. She has studied additionally with Alex Klein, Robert Atherholt and Mark Ostoich.
